Job Summary:
The field mechanic
performs general repair and maintenance on assigned gasoline and
diesel-powered equipment and other units in the field; usually
works out of a district maintenance building. This position
is governed by equipment shop and repair manuals. Responsibilities
are performed under general supervision. Knowledge of mechanical,
electrical, and hydraulic systems as might be acquired through
completion of an associate degree in automotive technology in
addition to graduation from high school. Twelve months of
experience with the department in mechanic related posotiions
or 24 months of experience outside the department in comparable
positions. A valid Class A commercial driver's license with
no air brake restrictions.
Substitution
of experience for associate's degree requires a waiver from the
Human Resources Committee, unless the employee held this position
or one of the following jobs prior to July 1989; mechanic helper,
shop mechanic, mechanic supervisor, or auto body mechanic.
Special Working
Conditions/Job Characteristics:
Required to maintain
a valid vehicle inspecting license.
Required to respond
to emergency call-in.
Work is performed outdoors
in all weather conditions.
Exposure to welding
fumes.
Work may be performed
in high traffic volume areas.
