MoDOT Meets with City and County Officials on Glasgow Bridge Project
MACON - The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) met with over 30 city, county and state officials and business owners on Tuesday to discuss the proposed time-line for the rehabilitation of the Missouri River Bridge at Glasgow.
When no bids were received from contractors on the project in September, MoDOT needed to revise the original time-line presented during the public meetings last June.
The new proposed time-line discussed on Tuesday begins with a bid opening in December:
Contract Bids Opened Dec. 21, 2007
Project Awarded Jan. 10, 2008
Contractor Notice to Proceed March 10, 2008
Begin Bridge Closure Window June 1, 2008
Bridge Closure Window 15 months
Maximum Bridge Closure Days 365 calendar days
End Bridge Closure Window Sept. 1, 2009
Project Completion Date Dec. 31, 2009
The begin and end bridge closure window indicates that the contractor will have a 15-month window from June 1, 2008 to Sept. 1, 2009 during which time the bridge closure will be allowed. Within that window, the bridge can only be closed for a 12-month period (365 calendar days).
The contract will include a liquidated damages/liquidated savings clause that MoDOT anticipates will reduce the closure period from 12 months to as short as 10 months. The 15-month window is intended to give the contractor flexibility to schedule his work during the most appropriate period.
MoDOT will release the bid information after bids are opened on December 21.

Continuation of Repairs on Miami River Bridge
MACON - The Missouri Department of Transportation's bridge crew will begin repairs on the Miami River Bridge on Route 41 in Saline and Carroll Counties as soon as weather permits. The work is a continuation of the same type of preventative maintenance repairs to the north end of the bridge that the crews began last spring.
Most of the work will take place from 7:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Crews may also work Friday through Sunday during various stages of the repair. The repairs will take several weeks to complete, and the work is weather dependent.
The bridge will be reduced to one-lane traffic during working hours, and reopened to two-lane traffic when crews are not working on the bridge. Additionally, crews will need to close the bridge to traffic during some of the repairs. The closure will take place over a weekend, and the public will be informed of the closure at least one week before.
Motorists are urged to use extreme caution in and around the work zone and choose alternate routes when possible.

New Bridge on Route 5 over Shannon Creek in Chariton County Opened Today
MACON - The Missouri Department of Transportation announced the newly constructed bridge on Route 5 in Chariton County over Shannon Creek opened to traffic today.
The project, which began in the spring, replaced the old bridge with a new structure and realigned a section of roadway to straighten a curve.
Finishing touches on the project are still in progress, so motorists are urged to continue to use caution in the area as travelers become accustom to the new alignment, and contractors finish the project.
A ribbon cutting ceremony is scheduled for October 29 at 10:30 a.m. near the project on Route WW. The public is invited to attend.

Solution Chosen for Route E Bridge over Muddy Creek in Mercer County
MACON - The Missouri Department of Transportation has concluded the information gathering process and has chosen a solution for the Rte. E Bridge over Muddy Creek. After three weeks of research by bridge engineers, geologists and land surveyors, the decision has been made to repair the slide and replace the bridge on its current alignment. Results from the research confirmed that the bank can be re-stabilized, and a new structure replaced at the same location.
MoDOT will begin the process to survey the area, locate utilities and design the new structure. MoDOT will also need to find resources to fund the approximate $750,000 cost for the project, and put the contract out for bid.
A time line for construction and when the bridge will be reopened to traffic has not yet been determined, but MoDOT hopes to have the project completed by mid-summer of 2008.
"We realize closing this bridge is a hardship on those who travel this road every day," said District Engineer Dan Niec. "This was a very unexpected situation and we will move as quickly as possible to get the job under contract; but for the safety of the traveling public, the bridge will need to remain closed to traffic until we have resolved the problem by re-stabilizing the bank and building the new structure. We appreciate everyone's patience as we move through this process."

No Contractor Bids Received for the Glasgow Bridge Rehabilitation
MACON - The Missouri Department of Transportation opened contractor bids last Friday for several projects across Missouri; one of those projects was the rehabilitation of the Historic Missouri River Bridge on Route 240 at Glasgow. Unfortunately, no contractor bids were received for this project.
"We will reevaluate the project and talk with the contracting industry to determine what steps we can take to encourage a successful bidding process in the future," said District Engineer Dan Niec. "We will continue moving forward to re-bid the project as soon as possible."
The bridge rehabilitation would provide a new plate girder bridge 26 feet wide with no vertical clearance restrictions, and would extend the life of the bridge by 50 years. During the rehabilitation the bridge will be closed to traffic.
