MACON/HANNIBAL – MoDOT has reached another milestone on the US 36 corridor project to four-lane 52-miles between Macon and Hannibal. The project has surpassed its halfway mark and is now 50% complete. Although it’s been a challenging construction season due to unusually heavy rainfall, we’re making progress, and this corridor project has reached a point that both MoDOT and motorists have been looking forward to. “The commitment we made to complete this project in 2010 is not in jeopardy,” said District Engineer Dan Niec. “The contractors have worked hard to do everything they can to make up for lost time. They have made good progress on this corridor in recent weeks and will continue their efforts until the entire 52-miles are complete and open to traffic, which is targeted for December 2009.” Additional lanes between Monroe City and Hannibal opened last month, and work on all major aspects of the project including grading, paving and bridge work will continue throughout the winter as long as the weather permits.
MoDOT thanks taxpayers in Marion, Monroe, Shelby and Macon Counties who passed a one-half cent, 15-year sales tax in 2006 to fund half of the entire project’s cost. Without their support we would not be gaining this important upgrade to the US 36 corridor.
